One of Portland’s busiest streets may get a dramatic overhaul. Not everyone is on board

A painstaking transformation is afoot along 82nd Avenue, one of Portland’s busiest and often dangerous roads.

Treelined traffic medians to deter speeding now dot the four-lane thoroughfare that runs through some of the most racially diverse and low-income parts of the city. There are repaved sections of the road, new crossing signals, wider sidewalks and curb ramps.

The next phase of the substantial remake is approaching the horizon as TriMet moves toward the launch of a rapid transit overhaul of a bus line that currently boasts more riders — and more delays — than any other in its system…
