In Beaverton, a beloved elementary school could close, with the blessing of teachers and parents

Typically, when word spreads that a beloved neighborhood school is under consideration for closure, community members grab their metaphorical pitchforks and circle the wagons in full-throated protest.

But at Beaverton’s McKay Elementary, an open letter signed by more than 60 families and backed by the school’s staff and leadership calls on the school board to fast-track the closure of their school.

They’ve endorsed a proposal to split the school’s community, sending roughly half of the students there to Greenway Elementary in the fall, and the other half to the modernized Raleigh Hills Elementary, which will have space for up to 750 students when its new building opens in August. School board members will consider the proposal at a meeting next week…
