Portland Ombudsman probes tiny home evictions by largest homeless services provider

Note: The city says forced removal from shelter sites are not legally considered evictions because guests are not tenants and the individual units are not considered a home in legal terms. For the purposes of brevity and clarity KATU will continue using the term. The Cambridge English dictionary defines an eviction as “the action of forcing someone to move out of a property.” The city refers to these as “exits.”

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — After reviewing multiple appeals, the Portland Ombudsman’s Office recommended pausing evictions from alternative shelter sites run by the city’s largest homeless services provider due to an alleged lack of documentation supporting the reasons for removing homeless residents.

The city followed the recommendation but will now resume evictions after its own review found them justified. The Ombudsman’s Office is set to review the city’s findings in the coming weeks…
