PDX impacted after Mexico flight cancellations due to ‘civil unrest’

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Flights to and from Mexico are being canceled on Sunday due to “ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity,” according to the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico. Portland International Airport is among the impacted destinations, with Alaska Airlines citing “civil unrest” near Mexican airports for some of its cancellations.

In addition, U.S. citizens in Mexico are being advised to shelter in place in various parts of the region, U.S. officials said.

The announcement comes after the Mexican army killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho, ” on Sunday. Oseguera Cervantes was wounded in an operation to capture him in Tapalpa, Jalisco, about a two-hour drive southwest of Guadalajara, and he died while being flown to Mexico City, the Defense Department said in a statement…
