Beaverton woman in Mexico shelters in place as cartel violence erupts after El Mencho killing

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (KPTV) – A Beaverton woman spending the winter in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, said she watched at least 17 fires break out across the city Sunday after Mexican military forces killed Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho.

Shu-Ling Garver, who has owned a home in downtown Puerto Vallarta since 2021, said her morning began without incident before smoke appeared over the city’s downtown area around 8:15 a.m.

“We got up and [were] sitting out sipping coffee about 8, 8:15,” Garver said. “Then all of a sudden I raised my head and noticed big smoke coming out of the building in downtown.”…
