PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Multnomah County Animal Services is resuming full operations after a 10-day quarantine for a deadly respiratory illness outbreak among dogs in the shelter’s care.
Multnomah County announced Monday that the shelter is resuming dog adoptions and intakes of stray dogs after the Oregon Department of Agriculture lifted the quarantine.
The pause in adoptions and intakes occurred after at least two dogs died from Streptococcus zooepidemicus — a contagious bacterium that can cause rapid-onset pneumonia in dogs. According to the county, the shelter also humanely euthanized a dog with SZ symptoms the day the quarantine began.
