Hillsboro family loses $2,500 in back-to-back AI ‘kidnapping’ scam calls

HILLSBORO, Ore. (KATU) — Scammers are using a new tactic to target their victims — AI to make it sound like their loved ones are in danger.

One Hillsboro family is now speaking out, telling KATU they were scammed out of $2,500 after receiving back-to-back calls Thursday morning where the callers said they had their daughters, whose lives were at risk.

Tina, who only wanted to be identified by her first name, told KATU she received a call that began with what sounded like her daughter whimpering, and the caller claiming she had gotten into an accident…
