Portland is right to test home sharing as part of its housing response, (“Portland will pay onetime grants of $1,000 to homeowners who rent out rooms,” Feb. 24). Activating spare bedrooms can create housing options quickly without waiting years for financing, permitting and construction.
At the same time, a one-time $1,000 grant is unlikely to be what ultimately motivates most homeowners to participate. The real question is whether people feel confident opening their homes. Concerns about privacy, compatibility, safety and what happens if a placement begins to struggle are far more influential than a modest financial incentive.
If this pilot is going to succeed beyond a small number of placements, Portland must focus as much on support as on recruitment: strong matching, clear expectations for shared living, early check-ins, accessible mediation and behavioral health support that is real and reachable when challenges arise…
