Woman ‘directed’ her dog to bite a man in a crowded Portland phone store. Does the dog deserve to die?

A dog that a Multnomah County hearings officer ruled was used by its owner as a weapon against people in a crowded phone store last year could have its fate decided on Tuesday.

The dog, Bruno, has been held at the county’s animal shelter for more than a year, while his owner appealed a county finding that Bruno should be euthanized because he acted aggressively toward multiple people in the phone store and bit at least one of them. A hearing on the latest legal challenge from Bruno’s owner is set for 3 p.m. Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

Shannon Gelfand, Bruno’s owner, is fighting to keep him from being euthanized. Her attorney Mark Gorski, working pro bono as a volunteer with the Animal Legal Defense Fund, said he has been trying to find solutions the county would approve, such as having Bruno go live with Gelfand’s family or another entity…
