1 person killed in living pod fire at North Portland shelter

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A person has died after a living pod caught fire at a shelter in North Portland on Monday, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters were sent to the Safe Rest Village along N Portland Rd just north of N Columbia Blvd just before 6 p.m., where callers reported a single living pod was engulfed in flames.

The crew at the scene was able to quickly put out the fire and prevent the flames from spreading to other living pods.

According to the City of Portland’s website, the North Portland Road Safe Rest Village offers 90 sleeping units and 70 RV parking spots. The city-run temporary alternative shelter opened in November 2024 and is currently operated by Urban Alchemy…
