Beaverton looks at possible monthly fee on utility bills to help with declining revenues

With Beaverton facing significant upcoming budget shortfalls, city leaders are looking at a revenue source that could help ease some of those woes.

The Beaverton City Council is looking at the possibility of tacking a monthly service fee onto utility bills in order to offset financial losses. The move comes as part of the city’s fiscal sustainability action plan, which has reduced expenses by $9 million since 2022, eliminating 32 staff positions in the process.

During a Tuesday, March 3, work session, Elizabeth Coffey, Beaverton’s interim city manager, said the goal is to have the council first determine what the revenue from a service fee would be used for and what type of fee structure the city wants to look at in an effort to aid the city’s general fund, which is used to support day-to-day services including police, the library and more…
