A Southwest Portland park that once bore the name of a U.S. military officer who massacred Indigenous people will be renamed ‘Scht Wiwnu Park (pronounced Ish-chit Way-el-noo), Portland officials announced this week.
They also released a recording of the name pronounced by Native speaker Dallas Winishut, a teacher of Ichiskin Sńwit, which is spoken by Native American tribes from the Columbia River area, including the Nez Perce, Umatilla, Warm Springs and Yakama. (You can find that recording here.)
