‘I feel really bad’: Woman charged in Elephants fire was trying to stay warm

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — New details have emerged in the fire that destroyed Elephants Delicatessen’s flagship location early March 10 in Northwest Portland.

Caherine Elaine Stough, 56, was arrested March 11 and charged with reckless burning and second degree criminal mischief, both misdemeanors.

“I started the fire at Elephants Deli,” she told investigators, according to charging documents. “It was an accident, I didn’t mean to do it.”

Stough, who is identified in court documents as a person experiencing houselessness, reportedly said she went to Elephants that night because sometimes they leave the patio heaters on, and she wanted to get warm…
