Estimated completion date for upgrades to Abernethy Bridge could be pushed back

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The estimated completion of a project upgrading the bridge between West Linn and Oregon City could be pushed back.

Construction crews for the I-205 Abernethy Bridge Project are now expecting to wrap it up in early January 2028, staff with the Oregon Department of Transportation told the Oregon Transportation Commission on Thursday. The agency’s contract with construction company Kiewit previously established that the upgrades would be complete by Oct. 21 of this year, according to a letter from OTC’s Interim Director Lisa Sumption.

Crews began the project, which entails seismic retrofits, in 2022. Officials have said it will be the Portland metro area’s “first earthquake-ready interstate bridge over the Willamette River” — but both the timeline and construction costs have changed.

The amount of funding authorized for bridge construction currently stands at $672 million, although $499 million had already been used for the project through this February. Stakeholders estimate that delays between six months and 10 months would lead to at least $10 million in additional costs…
