Portland native goes ‘deeper’ in reprised role as ex-cop in Prime Video’s ‘Cross’

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Delivering one-liners like “Bye, Felicia!” and “Release the kraken,” a Portland native captured audiences once again in a popular series from Amazon’s Prime Video.

Johnny Ray Gill has returned as Bobby Trey, a former police officer-turned-devious henchman, in the streaming service’s “Cross.” When the Jefferson High School alum first appears in season two of the series, his character is seen serenading a plant to Gill Scott-Heron’s “I’ll Take Care Of You” just moments before being freed from jail.

And the actor’s scene-stealing role only ramps up from there.

“Season two is just about going deeper,” Gill told KOIN 6. “I think anytime you get an opportunity to further explore a character, it’s like with what [Rainer Maria Rilke] says in ‘Letters to a Young Poet.’ You just are mining yourself deeper. So in Bobby Trey, especially, he has his own engine. He runs on his own time, and you know, he’s always out for his own interest.”

Based on a series of James Patterson novels, “Cross” stars Aldis Hodge as a Washington, D.C. detective and psychologist tasked with solving — and preventing — murders. More than 40 million viewers worldwide tuned in within the first 20 days of the season one premiere in November 2024, causing Prime Video to refer to it as a “breakout hit.”
