One of Portland’s best restaurants just opened a bar with grilled cheese and Champagne

L’Orange, the wine-focused Southeast Portland bistro named one of the city’s best new restaurants in 2023, now has a nearby sister bar focused on sparking wine and grilled cheese.

Buvons, which opened quietly last week, specializes in sparking wine, with a list of bottles selected by L’Orange owned Jeff Vejr ranging from Austria to Oregon, plus glass pours of “real Champagne” ($30-$44) kept fresh using a Perlage Wine System.

Found on Southeast Belmont Street just around the corner from Kachka, the intimate room has midnight blue walls and seating for just 14 people, according to L’Orange chef Joel Stocks.

Stocks designed a menu of nibbles, dips and sandwiches to pair with bubbles, with many dishes nodding to L’Orange. Those include small snacks of olives, almonds and bread and butter as well as chicken liver mousse, an albacore tuna melt and a beef cheek and Gruyère melt with caramelized onion jus…
