A late-night family stay at a Newport condo turned into an hours-long standoff after police say a Portland man fired two shots inside the unit, then holed up in a bedroom before finally surrendering. Relatives who were sharing the condo managed to get out and call for help, and officials say no one was hurt. The ordeal began in the early hours of Saturday at a condominium on Southeast Bay Boulevard.
What police say happened
According to KPTV, Newport police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Johnson Rin of Portland. Officers were called just before 1:30 a.m. to the 1000 block of Southeast Bay Boulevard after reports of gunfire inside the building.
Investigators say Rin fired one round into the ceiling above a room where guests were sleeping and another into a closet door. He then refused to leave his bedroom, touching off a standoff that stretched until about 8 a.m., when police say he finally surrendered peacefully. During the standoff, police negotiators stayed in contact with Rin by phone, according to the department. Family members who had been in the condo were interviewed at the scene, and authorities say the unit remains secured as the investigation continues.
