Union warns PSU may cut entire Gen Ed program as 200 staff could be laid off

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Portland State University’s Board of Trustees met on Friday as the university worked to close what administrators describe as a structural budget deficit, with potential cuts and a tuition increase under consideration.

University leaders said no final layoff decisions have been made, but the school is evaluating cuts to departments and a 5% tuition increase as it looks for ways to remain financially stable.

Outside the meeting, faculty union members rallied, arguing the proposed cuts would harm students and academic programs before any growth plan is in place…
