‘I hope to prove you wrong’: Multnomah County appoints LA-area official to head homeless services in split vote

The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners officially appointed the Portland area’s next homeless services director in a split vote Thursday.

Nathaniel VerGow, a leader at the Los Angeles County Homeless Services Authority, will step into one of the toughest jobs in town on May 4 at a salary of $240,000 a year. He will do so without total support from the county board, which approved the selection 3-2.

“I’ve been passionately working to address homelessness for more than twenty years now, and look forward to bringing my experience from other communities to bear here in Multnomah County,” VerGow told the board…
