Man who shoved commuter into path of MAX train says addiction ‘robbed me of my sanity’

A Portland man who was in the midst of a drug binge when he shoved a commuter onto the path of an oncoming MAX train vowed to commit himself to sobriety during a sentencing hearing.

Michael L. Moreland said he had no memory of the May 21, 2024 incident at the Providence Park light-rail stop on Southwest Yamhill Street, which could have turned deadly if not for a quick-thinking train driver.

Luckily, the driver stopped the train just a foot or two away from Patrick Kirby, who was waiting at the platform when he was shoved unexpectedly from behind by Moreland…
