PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A new synthetic opioid believed to be 10 times more potent than fentanyl has emerged in Rhode Island’s illicit drug supply, prompting concern from public health and law enforcement authorities.
The drug, called cychlorphine, has been identified in other parts of the country in recent months. A spokesperson for the R.I. Department of Health said the substance was found in three drug samples seized in the state between January and March.
