Providence expands cooling resources ahead of hot Fourth of July weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — As a heat wave settles over Southern New England for the Fourth of July weekend, Providence city leaders are expanding cooling resources, extending pool hours and opening free attractions to help residents stay safe.

Mayor Brett Smiley announced Thursday that the city has expanded cooling centers across Providence and urged residents to take the dangerous temperatures seriously.

“As we are on the cusp of the Fourth of July weekend, we’re also at a moment of extreme heat here in our city,” Smiley said. “We want our neighbors to know that we’re doing everything we can to keep them safe throughout the holiday weekend.”…
