PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Democratic primary for governor continued to heat up on Thursday, with Gov. Dan McKee receiving another rebuke from his hometown, while standing by his attacks on rival Helena Foulkes over CVS Health’s role in the opioid crisis.
The endorsement of Foulkes by Jeff Mutter, mayor of McKee’s hometown of Cumberland, came as no surprise after he also backed her at last month’s state party convention. But it still marked a significant shift for Mutter, who counted McKee as a political mentor in the 1990s and supported him for governor four years ago.
In an interview with 12 News, Mutter said he believed McKee wasn’t the same man he used to be. He pointed to the governor’s handling of a 2021 scandal involving land owned by his then-chief of staff, former Cumberland Police Chief Tony Silva, as well as his recent reversal on charter schools…
