PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — As the Midwest deals with an outbreak of cyclosporiasis– an intestinal infection known for causing diarrhea– Rhode Island and Massachusetts have not seen any signs of a large-scale outbreak, according to both states’ health departments.
The Rhode Island Department of Health says that since May 1, only one outbreak in the entire state has been reported. Small numbers of cases, RIDOH says, are not uncommon, as Rhode Island reportedly saw six cases of the infection last year, and 12 cases throughout 2024.
According to RIDOH, residents of the state are at a low risk of developing cyclosporiasis, and most people with healthy immune systems will be able to recover from a case of it without any treatment necessary…
