North Providence renovates DPW garage over bird-related health concerns

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Years of bird nesting inside the North Providence Department of Public Works garage have recently created an unsanitary work environment, prompting renovations to address potential health concerns.

For roughly two decades, finches have lived in the DPW garage ceiling. Employees became accustomed to their presence, and some even fed them, essentially treating the birds as pets, according to Mayor Charles Lombardi.

Lombardi told 12 News that over the last three or four months, the situation evolved from a “friendly atmosphere” into a nuisance as new employees complained about the growing bird population and their droppings. Currently, a couple dozen or more finches occupy the garage…
