SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — A man was arrested for allegedly trying to scam a Smithfield resident out of money and showing up at their home on Wednesday.
According to police, a homeowner reported that someone on the other line was instructing him to wrap $5,000 in newspaper, place the cash in an envelope, and a man named “Ismail” would arrive to collect it from their house.
The caller allegedly said Smithfield police were involved, claiming the money was needed to bail out his son after he was involved in an accident. Not long after, a white SUV pulled into the homeowner’s driveway…
