The Capron Park Zoo community is mourning the loss of Kayla St. George, a longtime animal care professional whose compassion for animals shaped both her career and the lives of everyone who worked alongside her.
The zoo shared news of her passing in a heartfelt tribute, remembering Kayla for the curiosity, respect, and deep affection she showed toward every animal in her care. Her influence extended beyond the enclosures she managed, touching colleagues and visitors who saw firsthand the bonds she built with the animals she worked with.
A Childhood Dream Turned Into a Calling
Kayla’s love for animals began early in life. As a child, watching the film Free Willy sparked a dream of forming trusting relationships with animals and helping them take part in their own care. That early inspiration guided her through years of education, volunteer work, and internships until she eventually found her place at Capron Park Zoo.
She had a particular fondness for whales and warthogs, but colleagues say what set her apart was her ability to see each animal as an individual rather than simply a member of a species. Among the animals closest to her heart were Everett, a warthog she considered her personal favorite, and Kela, a beluga whale she once cared for at another facility. …
