Rhode Island has many claims to fame. It was the first colony to declare its independence from Great Britain in 1776. It’s known as the sailing capital of the world. It is even home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. While many of the cities and small towns in Rhode Island have earned their own bragging rights, the historic village of Wickford is one of my favorites. Known for its location on Narragansett Bay, annual festivals, and friendly locals, it’s the historic architecture that I particularly love. In fact, Wickford is home to one of the largest collections of 18th-century and colonial-era homes in the Northeast.
What Makes Wickford, Rhode Island, Worth Visiting
Wickford is a historic village in North Kingstown, built around a protected harbor on Narragansett Bay. It is a lovely escape for outdoor lovers, with opportunities to explore right on the water. Wickford Harbor is a delightful place for a quiet walk, observing the boats in the bay, and even stopping for a delicious bite at the Gardner’s Wharf Seafood Market. If you want to spend time paddling on the calm waters, don’t forget to bring a kayak or paddleboard, or even rent one from a local shop.
Wickford was first settled in 1637 and began as a small trading post before it grew into a vital port and shipping center. Its strategic location also made it an important site during the Revolutionary War. Throughout the years, Wickford has seen change, tragedy, and growth, from becoming a transportation hub in the late 1800s to enduring a devastating hurricane in 1938. Today, this village of approximately 23,000 residents is known as one of the oldest preserved colonial villages in the U.S.

The stories of this area can make anyone excited to visit Wickford Village. Simply walk through town, and you’ll see many of the buildings that make up one of the largest collections of historic homes in the Northeastern U.S. I recommend that you bring history to life and learn about the people who called each dwelling home by taking one of the self-guided walking tours. Several tour options are available that take you around town, and interactive maps are available.
Other historic buildings in Wickford you don’t want to miss include the Old Narragansett Church. Built in 1707, this is believed to be the oldest Episcopal church in the Northeast. Also, Smith’s Castle, located along the western shore of the Narragansett Bay, is certainly not a castle by today’s standards, but a historic home that dates back to 1678 and is the oldest surviving plantation house in the U.S.

There is no bad time to visit this historic village in Rhode Island. In spring, the temperatures warm up enough for walking, and flowers add plenty of color as they bloom around the historic homes.
