PROVIDENCE — Friday afternoon the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management sent a notice of intent to enforce to Billy Brauer, general manager of Electrolizing Inc., for alleged hazardous waste violations at the Houghton Street facility.
DEM found the plant violated 13 hazardous waste regulations, including insufficient labeling of hazardous waste, insufficient documentation and poor record keeping, storing hazardous waste for more than 90 days, and failing to properly report a spill.
The state agency received two anonymous complaints on Aug. 25 that alleged: a chemical containment tank at the metal-finishing and chromium-coating facility containing various hazardous chemicals, such as trivalent and hexavalent chromium mixed with water, alkaline, and other acids, was leaking; and the plant’s spillway housing that contained a mix of liquids, including hexavalent chromium, has readily been declining in volume…
