Man arrested after jumping out of motel window

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police arrested a man who attempted to evade capture by jumping out of a second-floor window at an East Providence motel Tuesday.

East Providence Police Captain Michael Rapoza tells 12 News officers responded to the Rumford Motor Inn to investigate a hang-up call when the man hopped out of the window and onto an adjacent roof.

“It took numerous officers to take the suspect into custody,” Rapoza said. “The situation was extremely dangerous … as the suspect was fighting and attempting to jump off the roof.”

Rapoza said the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs, and officers found “evidence of illicit narcotic activity” in the room that he tried to escape from.

The man, who has not been identified, is currently in police custody at Rhode Island Hospital. It’s unclear what charges he will be facing.

The Rumford Motor Inn has been a point of contention in the city for years , with officers responding there routinely for issues that threaten the safety and security of residents.
