PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — If you grew up in Rhode Island, you might recall the old Wes’ Rib House television ads boasting authentic wood-smoked barbecue on Dike Street in Olneyville.
Wes’ Rib House shut its doors a few years ago, but the local institution is now back with new ownership and a return to recipes that customers have come to love since 1973.
The original Wes was a truck driver who moved to Rhode Island from Missouri, according to the restaurant’s website . Wes opened his first restaurant on Broad Street before moving the business to Dike Street 10 years later.
Wes’ Rib House was recently purchased by a “few local restaurateurs” who fell in love with the nostalgia behind the barbecue, the website notes. The story of the restaurant and their own memories of visiting Wes’ as kids inspired the new owners to embark on an extensive renovation and a pledge to bring back quality barbecue.
The restaurant officially reopened its doors earlier this month with a new, yet familiar menu that includes, pork ribs, pulled pork, brisket and a variety of sandwiches and sides.
