Board rejects controversial Johnston solar farm

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A controversial solar farm proposed for a neighborhood in Johnston has been given a thumbs down from the town’s zoning board.

The board voted unanimously to deny the proposed farm that would have been placed on a 160-acre plot along Windsor Avenue.

After the vote, people in attendance applauded and shouted their thanks.

Matthew Landry, an attorney for a group of neighbors opposing the solar farms, said it was crucial that many people came out to express their opinions.

“This is a rural neighborhood with expensive homes and they have their interests here. This would’ve greatly impacted those interests. So without their participation and their efforts, who knows what would have happened,” he said.

The developers, Green Development LLC, previously explained their 19-megawatt solar field would have been in use for at least 25 years and would have likely generated more than $3 million in revenue over that period.
