Man shot, killed in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed in Providence Thursday evening.

Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin said the man’s body was found just before 10 p.m. in a vacant area off Legion Memorial Drive.

He has not yet been identified.

A 12 News crew on scene saw crews working with detectives to pry open a storage unit, where some computer monitors and other technology were being removed.

Providence Police Col. Oscar Perez did not specify what officers were looking into.

“It’s a nice neighborhood, again it’s unfortunate but I’ll tell you this, the detectives will do their work and the Providence Police Department will do the work to gather the evidence we need to bring and hold those accountable that committed this act today,” Perez said.

It’s unclear whether police have anyone in custody.

This is the capital city’s first homicide of the year.
