Warwick asks Costco to consider opening there instead

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Costco Wholesale Club may still be coming to Rhode Island.

The state’s first Costco was supposedly in the works to be built at the site of the former ACI building on Goddard Road in Cranston. But last week, 12 News learned Costco withdrew its zoning and permit applications months ago.

Is Costco a no-go? Retailer may not open in Cranston after all

Because of that, Warwick City Council President Steve McAllister invited Costco officials to visit Warwick and discuss opening a store there instead.

McAllister said he offered to get the mayor, city council, and other city and state leaders in a room with Costco to answer any questions they may have.

“Warwick is a special place and has numerous locations that would be a perfect fit for Costco,” McAllister said. “I look forward to speaking with Costco officials so I can highlight why Warwick should be the location of their next box store and warehouse.”

McAllister is waiting to hear back from Costco.

After hearing the news, Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins told 12 News that Warwick is a “fine city” and understands why another community would want a company like Costco.
