In Bristol, Rhode Island, a 28-year-old woman has been sentenced to over three decades in prison for suffocating her boyfriend’s grandmother and pilfering her personal belongings, which she then sold to fuel her drug addiction.
Selena Martinez was handed a 60-year prison term by a judge for the 2017 murder of 62-year-old Eudora Gustafson. However, she will only serve 35 years behind bars. Martinez entered a guilty plea on January 19 to several charges, including second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, theft, forgery, and obtaining property under false pretenses.
Martinez’s boyfriend, Raymond Paiva IV, received a similar sentence in October, with 60 years in prison, 20 of which were suspended. Paiva also pleaded guilty to the charges, except he faced an additional count of forgery.
According to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, on February 10, 2017, Martinez, driven by a craving for heroin, attacked Gustafson in her home while Gustafson’s husband was away at work. Martinez and Paiva assaulted Gustafson, ultimately suffocating her with a pillow and a trash bag.
