New York Bagel Co. is changing hands. See what’s in store for the popular SouthCoast shop.

FALL RIVER — Start spreading the news. The city’s “home of the better bagel” is poised to get bigger and better.

Fall River City Councilor Cliff Ponte, owner of Al Mac’s Diner and Al Mac’s On-The-Go, aims to build on his Fall River breakfast empire, announcing this week that he has an agreement to purchase the well-known New York Bagel Company.

A go-to for its wide variety of authentic New York bagels with an array of tasty toppings, New York Bagel has been serving up morning fuel and afternoon pick-me-ups like coffee, pastries, breads, sandwiches, and salads for over three decades.

A joint venture with family friend Kyle Lima and his wife Dawn Lima, the trio will be taking the reins of New York Bagel’s two SouthCoast spots at 1572 President Ave. in Fall River, and 272 State Road in Dartmouth.

“It’s about continuing a legacy,” Ponte said. “New York Bagel operators have been in business for over 35 years and it’s always intriguing to me, personally, to continue to build a legacy like we did with Al Mac’s — to a certain degree building on it with our Al Mac’s On-The-Go location in Fall River.”
