Suspects at-large in officer-involved shooting investigation

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened around the Providence-Cranston line on Sunday.

Cranston Police Major Todd Patalano said this stemmed from an alleged shoplifting incident at a retail store at the Garden City Shopping Center.

The shoplifting incident was reported around 5:16 p.m. by an employee after a man and woman allegedly stole a rack of clothing.

Police said around 5:21 p.m. a Cranston officer saw the shoplifting suspects’ vehicle on Reservoir Avenue at a red light near the on-ramp to Route 10 in the City of Providence.

The man who was driving allegedly didn’t listen to the officer when asked to leave exit his vehicle, and the female passenger told him to drive away, according to police.

As the driver was fleeing, he allegedly ran over the officer’s foot, who shot one round from her firearm in response.

Police said the driver then drove off and got on Route 10 North, being last seen around Niantic Avenue.
