‘Industrial dystopia’: Taunton neighbors sound alarm over plan to develop city-owned land

TAUNTON — For the second time in as many months a neighborhood has come together to tell the city of Taunton to leave land alone.

In this case, the residents of Powderhorn Drive and adjacent streets are pleading with the city not to sell or develop the 36 acres that comprise the triangular-shaped parcel known as 745 John Hancock Road, which separates the neighborhood from the noise and activities of the industrial park.

“To industrialize this property is poor planning. This is our only buffer to the park. This is all we have left,” said Maureen Mosher, a Powderhorn Drive resident who has worked the last couple of weeks informing her neighborhood about the city’s plans.

Inspired by successful effort to block development

Mosher said she was inspired by recent successful opposition efforts to the rezoning and development plans for an adjacent parcel of land, 29-14 Prince Henry Drive/Lot 77E, which touches 745 John Hancock and has the same wildlife and existing features, such as wetlands.
