The View From Swamptown: Innovative Bob Bean changed North Kingstown forever

Last week, I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at Jiggers South on Boston Neck Road with two good friends, Mike Donohue and Dan Urish. Dan is a retired Navy officer and we got to talking about Bob Bean, the first owner of the restaurant building we were in, and the motel, the Hamilton Village Inn, that wraps around it. Dan remembers Bob Bean well and remarked that “Bob Bean’s motel was where Navy folks who were recently assigned to Quonset/Davisville would first live while they waited for Navy housing. Bob Bean was a good friend to countless Navy families back in the 50s and 60s.” This got me thinking about this colorful character and I thought we ought to take a look at his life.
