Two rare birds seen on island around the new year

Two birds never recorded in Jamestown were spotted on Conanicut Island within a week of each other. A greater white-fronted goose was seen Dec. 28 in Marsh Meadows during the annual bird count. The goose is migratory and breeds in northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Russia. It winters farther south in North America, Europe and Asia. In the United States, the geese are primarily found west of the Mississippi River, according to the Audubon Society.
