Sunday cartoon: Spring space heater safety

BURRILLVILLE – It may be spring, but it’s still March and the cold weather will still be around for a little while longer. In fact; the upcoming forecast for this week says that it will be off again, on again, cold and rainy. Nights are still going to be in the 30s and most daytime temperatures will only be in the 40s.

A lot of people will likely want to conserve oil and propane by still utilizing space heaters in their apartments and houses for another couple of weeks. Space heaters do help keep rooms warmer, but can also be hazardous for children. Kids should always stay at least 3 feet away from space heaters to help prevent unintentional burns.

It’s early spring, but these important home fire safety and burn prevention messages still apply when weather is cold, raw and rainy. Please keep space heaters away from doorways and exits and keep them at least 3 feet away from walls and other areas that can be affected by any heat source in your apartment or house. Never put wet clothes on space heaters to dry and never leave a space heater unattended for any length of time. When the weather does get warmer, it’s a smart move to put space heaters safely away until you need them again next fall. Make sure they are stored in a dry storage area after they are thoroughly cleaned…
