Town, School & State Officials Band Together to Increase School Funding

An $800,000+ proposed cut in state aid helps to rally the troops

With Gov. Dan McKee slashing education aid to East Greenwich by more than $800,000 in his proposed budget, local school and town officials are pressing EG’s state legislators for help and they’re listening.

Rep. Justine Caldwell (D-30, E.G.) and Rep. Evan Shanley (D-24, Warwick, E.G.) introduced a bill (2025-H 5749) in February to boost the funding that is provided to school districts when the state’s education aid to a particular community drops significantly year over year, as is threatened this year. The bill would provide 75 percent – up from the current 50 percent – of the loss through a “poverty loss stabilization” fund to “give the district more time to align its budget.”…
