Providence city councilors voice frustration over Smiley’s proposed 8-Law reform

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Some Providence City Council members are clashing with Mayor Brett Smiley over a pair of bills that would make reforms to the so-called 8-Law.

The City Council was presented a resolution during Thursday night’s meeting that opposed certain sections of the new bill . The resolution stated the bill contained provisions that would have “significant consequences on low-income housing, community stability, and revenue collection in Providence.”

Providence City Councilor Justin Roias called those sections of the bill a “blank check for developers.”…
