Mold exposure risk prompts recall of 1.7 million air conditioners

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Over 1.7 million U and U+ window air conditioners are being recalled due to the risk of mold exposure, which can cause respiratory problems, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Consumers report 152 instances of mold in the units, along with 17 cases of symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, and sore throats due to mold exposure.

This recall affects several models of air conditioners manufactured by Midea, which were sold under various brand names — including Frigidaire, Insignia and Keystone — at stores nationwide for prices ranging from $280 to $500 between March 2020 and May 2025.
