Traffic stop leads to cocaine bust in Smithfield

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man was arrested on drug charges Thursday evening following a traffic stop in Smithfield, according to police.

Officers responded to Esmond Street around 6:15 p.m. to assist the Drug Enforcement Administration. With the help of K-9 Ajax, police said they found 38.5 kilograms of cocaine inside the car.

Rafael Rivera, 33, was charged with possession of a Schedule I/II drug with intent to deliver (third offense) and possession of cocaine in excess of 1 kilogram.

Court records show he was held without bail following his arraignment on Friday.
