Make Friends and Learn New Skills After 50 in MA and RI

You are never too old to learn; if you make new friends along the way, that’s okay, too. That’s some of what’s happening with the Second Half Lifelong Learning Institute, a local non-profit organization.

What Is Second Half Lifelong Learning?

Its mission, as outlined on its website, “is to provide opportunities for residents of Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island to take part in study groups, lectures and special events so members can expand their knowledge and social circles.”

Joan Fye, President of the Institute’s Board of Directors, stopped by Townsquare Sunday to explain how the program works and how people can get involved. Fye has been active in Second Half for about 10 years.

Combating Isolation Through Community Learning

“There are a lot of seniors out there who are very isolated,” Fye said. “They really need to spend time with one another, make new friends, and go places. Second Half does that.”

What Kind of Classes Are Offered?

Fye is urging people over 50 to check out the catalog of classes and programs that will be available in mid-August on the Second Half Lifelong Learning Institute website. The list will likely include art classes, classes in foreign languages, health and wellness, history, nature and more. She said most of the classes are taught by retired professionals.

“There is a $150 charge to register and for the class itself. I know some people might think that’s a lot of money, but for me, it’s more than worth it,” Fye said. “You get to meet other people, learn new things, and sometimes it challenges you. I love it.”…
