Rhode Island revamps homeless services, ends hotel use as shelters

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — From stopping the use of hotels as temporary shelters to revamping the coordinated entry system for Rhode Island’s shelter beds, Gov. Dan McKee and Housing Secretary Deborah Goddard are making a series of changes to the way the state helps people experiencing homelessness.

“We know we have a problem. The governor’s very clear no one should be living on the streets, and we think with the reforms we’re making we have a more streamlined efficient strategic system in place,” Goddard said.

In recent years, the state’s coordinated entry system, which determines who gets a bed by weighing who has the greatest need, has struggled to keep up with demand leading to long wait times…
