McKee, Foulkes slam Brown Health over $3.3 million CEO severance payout

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island leaders on Thursday criticized the board of the state’s largest hospital group for granting millions of dollars in severance pay to the former chief executive of the system.

Target 12 revealed Wednesday that Brown Health paid former CEO Dr. Timothy Babineau an additional $3.3 million in severance in 2023 and 2024, bringing his total severance over three years to nearly $4 million. Babineau resigned in May 2022 after state regulators blocked his proposal to merge the system with rival Care New England.

The fresh revelation about Babineau’s exit payouts comes as hospital officials have been pleading with State House leaders for more taxpayer money, blaming low Medicaid reimbursement rates for issues such as a shortage of doctors and nurses…
