Report recommends City Council ‘explore’ rent control in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A new report in response to the housing crisis states that without “bold action” in Providence, more residents will continue to be priced out.

In March 2023, the Providence City Council created the Housing Crisis Task Force, which is chaired by Councilwoman Mary Kay Harris and also includes Councilman Pedro Espinal, Councilwoman Althea Graves, Councilwoman Shelley Peterson and Councilor Justin Roias.

The panel got input from residents, housing professionals, service providers and policy experts. After more than two years of work, the task force approved referring the 46-page report to the full City Council in a 4-1 vote on Monday night…
