McKee advisor involved in ‘fixed’ ILO deal cleared of lobbying complaint

Secretary of State Gregg Amore’s office has cleared Michael Magee, a confidant of Gov. Dan McKee, of violating state lobbying laws for helping steer a pandemic-era education contract to the ILO Group.

Common Cause Rhode Island filed a complaint against Magee last year. It argued he was legally required to register as a lobbyist in 2021 when he worked with McKee’s office to hire a firm founded by a former subordinate.

After investigating the complaint, Amore’s office found that Magee “was a clear presence in the [Request For Proposals] process and in many instances influenced the direction of an outcome,” which would qualify as lobbying…
